Scott Osterman is a visionary leader with a private sector background of guiding successful strategy and execution to realize growth, develop strong partnerships and lead companies through transition. Osterman is a north central Montana native whose roots date back to an 1860s miner’s cabin on Helena’s Last Chance Gulch and to an 1880s homestead in the Missouri Breaks. Mostly recently, Osterman served as senior director of business unit operations at Applied Materials in Kalispell. Over the course of his 30-year career, Osterman has served as a senior executive in Fortune 500 companies and venture start-ups in the semiconductor, automobile, and high-tech hardware and software industries. His broad experience in business includes strategic planning, rapid growth initiatives, operations, sales, market development, and turnaround execution. Osterman is a graduate of the University of Montana and continued his graduate studies at Washington State University.

Opening Doors Through Arabic

Craig Cangemi is a Senior Program Officer who oversees QFI’s Arab Societies and Cultures Program. In this role, he develops and implements professional development and grant opportunities for primary and secondary educators throughout the United States to develop a better understanding of the Middle East and Arab world and to provide effective strategies for teaching about the region in the classroom. 

Craig joined QFI in 2015. Prior to his work at QFI, he briefly served as a federal management consultant after three years of managing a diverse portfolio of research and development grants in the Middle East on behalf of the US Department of State and US Department of Energy at CRDF Global. He additionally conducted research on human security issues in the Middle East region with a specific focus on immigration, refugee and displacement issues at the Stimson Center. In addition to his current role at QFI, Craig also currently serves as the President of the Middle East Outreach Council, a national network of educators dedicated to disseminating apolitical and nonpartisan information, resources and activities that further the understanding about the Middle East, including the Arab world. 

Craig is a graduate of Davidson College in Davidson, NC, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a concentration in Arabic Studies. He has additionally completed coursework in Arabic and Global Studies at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland and completed a yearlong intensive Arabic studies program at the Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman, Jordan.

General Wesley Clark

Army Strong: Careers in the Army and NATO

Wesley K. Clark is a businessman, educator, writer and commentator who  serves as Chairman and CEO of Wesley K. Clark & Associates, a strategic  consulting firm. Clark retired as a four star general after 38 years in the United States Army, having served in his last assignments as Commander of US Southern Command and then as Commander of US European Command/ Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. He graduated first in his class at West Point and complete d degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University (B.A. and M.A.) as a Rhodes scholar. He worked with Ambassador Richard Holbrooke in the Dayton Peace Process, where he helped write and negotiate significant portions of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement. In his final assignment as Supreme Allied Commander Europe he led NATO forces to victory in Operation Allied Force, a 78-day air campaign, backed by ground invasion planning and a diplomatic process, saving 1.5 million Albanians from ethnic cleansing. His awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Defense Distinguished Service Medal (five awards), Silver star, bronze star, and purple heart. In 2019, Clark founded Renew America Together, a nonprofit organization designed to promote and achieve greater common ground in America by reducing partisan division and gridlock.

Deena Mansour

How Montana Roots Advantage an International Career

Since 2010, Deena has successfully brought $26 million in funding to the Mansfield Center, largely from the U.S. Department of State. These grants have supported the international exchange programs of more than 1,000 Montana and international students and professionals. She has served as a consultant for the State Department throughout mainland southeast Asia, and has lectured at a number of foreign universities, including Chiang Mai University, the National University of Laos, the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, and Jilin University. She is currently teaching a freshman seminar for the Global Leadership Initiative on Public Diplomacy. While her programmatic focus largely draws on her expertise in Asia, she develops leadership programs across the globe, from the Women’s Leadership Initiative here at UM to sports diplomacy programs for marginalized populations in Latin America. Deena’s vision for the Center includes the support of UM enrollment and internationalization goals by expanding programming across Montana, especially in secondary education; supporting international student recruitment; and expanding outreach on the ethical imperatives of leadership and public discourse. A recipient of the UM Distinguished Service to International Education Award and the Pantzer Presidential Humanitarian Award, she also served as a Presidential Leadership Fellow for UM President Royce C. Engstrom.

Deena earned her MPA here at UM and a BA in international relations and economics at American University. Past experience includes serving as a foreign service officer in public diplomacy, as marketing director for a Dow Jones community newspaper and developing exchange programs at the Institute of International Education. She has worked or studied in nearly 40 countries, and has studied Indonesian, Arabic, and French.

Ms Dagash-Kamara holds a Masters’ degree in Vernacular Architecture from Oxford Brookes University and a Bachelors’ degree in Architecture from the University of Khartoum, Sudan.

Her areas of expertise include human rights, comparative law, international law, constitutional law and complex civil litigation. Anna has a J.D. from the George Washington Law School, and an LL.M. and Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L) from McGill University’s Law School. Anna has litigated many large-scale complex cases, participated in several rule of law initiatives, and published extensively in international and comparative law. Ambassador Lisa Kubiske

How to become an Ambassador

Lisa Kubiske is a retired-but-active US diplomat who enjoyed a career in Latin America, China, and Washington D.C. Starting from coordinating US search teams following a major earthquake in Mexico in 1985 and researching Mexican migration to the United States, through assignments focused on democracy, prosperity, and security, she rose through the ranks to become US Ambassador to Honduras (2011- 2014) and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Finance and Development (2014-2017).

Ambassador Kubiske earned State’s highest award for her earthquake relief work. Since retirement, Lisa has been a guest-lecturer at universities, think tanks, and non-government organizations. She has given presentations on Central America, development, leadership, diplomacy, the United Nations, and international careers. She is an active mentor of students interested in public service and/or international careers. She has written the chapter on economic and commercial diplomacy for a textbook, Diplomatic Tradecraft, to be published in late 2023 or early 2024. She has also written a number of articles, including one entitled “Why There is Hope for Honduras.”

As an educator and counselor for over twenty-five years, Amy Friedman began her career as a middle school Art teacher. One parking lot conversation changed her world. A week after a colleague suggested considering teaching in Mexico, she and her husband were at a job fair in Iowa and accepted their first International teaching positions in Honduras. What seemed like a short-term opportunity at the time, ended in over twelve years of teaching and traveling abroad. She has lived and worked in Honduras, Bangladesh, and Denmark, before making her way back to the states and landing in Missoula, Montana. Both of her kids were born overseas and traveled everywhere she went. Amy currently has a private practice in mental health therapy, teaches parent education, yoga, and meditation, and loves to spend hours running trails, playing music, and making art.

World Wildlife Foundation

Fighting for Wildlife Around the Globe

Jessica Leung is program manager for WWF’s Early Talent Diversity Programs. She manages WWF’s centralized diversity-focused internship program and leads engagement with targeted minority-serving colleges/universities, student organizations, and other academic strategic partners. She also leads WWF's partnership with Smithsonian Institution, working with local high school students to address climate change and developing project-based action plans tailored to their communities. 

Previously, she was at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), where she served as a research fellow on energy and transportation and led organizational DEI efforts. This included drafting a DEI commitment statement, creating a DEI action plan, and leading the organization's first DEI working group. She also created new programs for interns while serving as their mentor. Prior to C2ES, she was an Equity, Inclusion, Diversity Committee coordinator at the Yale School of the Environment and an Environmental Services Specialist at Calpine Corporation.

Jessica earned a bachelor’s degree in managerial economics from the University of California, Davis and a master’s degree in environmental management from the Yale School of the Environment. She was born in Hong Kong and grew up in California.

Patrick Lendrum

Patrick Lendrum is the Senior Science Specialist for WWF’s Northern Great Plains (NGP) Program. He leads the development of science priorities for the program, implementing projects to answer key scientific questions that address the loss of native grasslands and the impacts that these losses may have on the wildlife and human communities that depend on them. Patrick also oversees the measurement of progress toward the NGP Program’s conservation goals and partnerships with a variety of stakeholders in order to develop shared conservation solutions.

Prior to joining WWF Patrick earned his M.S. and Ph.D. examining the effects of human-caused land use change on wildlife communities and ways to minimize disturbance while promoting sustainable development. He has worked across the western US in a variety of habitats spanning costal rainforests to prairie grasslands, with species ranging from insects to grizzly bears. Patrick has partnered with State, Federal, Private, and NGO entities to build large-scale collaborations in diverse working landscapes. The research Patrick has been involved with has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, BBC documentaries, and published in numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles. He is thrilled to now be conducting applied science that contributes towards WWF’s mission of a securing a future that meets the needs of humans and nature.

Libby Khumalo, PhD: BNGA Coordinator

Libby Khumalo serves as Coordinator of BNGA, a position currently hosted and funded by World Wildlife Fund’s Northern Great Plains Program through August 2023. A conservation social scientist by training, with skills in research design and qualitative analysis, the Spokane County, Washington native studied community-based conservation in Southern Africa and has taught a variety of conservation and recreation courses for the College of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana. After obtaining her Doctorate in Forestry, she worked for the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, assisting partners in the Blackfeet Nation, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, and the Fort Belknap Indian Community with climate change adaptation planning and implementation. Libby has coordinated many initiatives that spark new ideas and engagement, including the annual International Seminar on Protected Area Management, the Hands Across Borders transboundary conservation workshop, and new activities for the Helena (MT) Community Gardens. Libby is non-Native. She has had the great privilege of working with inspiring colleagues from Native nations across the Northern Great Plains, as well as in the ancestral homelands of the Salish and Kootenai where she was born and raised. Libby’s work as a Park Ranger and her early experiences planting and selling Christmas trees on her family farm has instilled a deep respect for working lands.

She has also worked in international sales and marketing for Winner International and owned and operated a boutique import/export firm for 15 years. Brigitta holds undergraduate degrees in International Affairs and Spanish Latin American Area studies from the American University in Washington, DC and an MBA from the University of Montana.

Michelle graduated from Florida State University in 2014 and immediately began her career in Advertising as an Account Management intern in NYC. She went on to work for McCann Worldwide, Havas NY, and then BBDO – all global agencies. As an Account Director, Michelle is responsible for maintaining client relationships, as well as working with internal agency teams to develop creative strategy and ensure all creative assets are delivered on time and on budget. Past brands Michelle has worked with include L'Oreal Paris, TJX (Holiday campaign), Liberty Mutual, Keurig, and Mars Wrigley brands (TWIX & SNICKERS). Michelle relocated to Missoula, Montana in 2021 to work for a local advertising company, PartnersCreative, as the Account Service Director. While now working for a small agency, Michelle works with local Montana companies, as well as large global brands in the professional services sector.

After studying art and advertising at Savannah College of Art + Design, Marissa moved to New York City to work as an art director. She is now a freelance creative director, specializing in visual and conceptual art direction in the beauty and wellness space. She enjoys strategic marketing, working on everything from digital design to social campaigns to broadcast and traditional advertising. Brands she has worked with include L'Oreal Paris, MAC Cosmetics, Shiseido Makeup and Skincare, Revlon, and Maybelline New York among others. Ambassador Ted Osius

ASEAN - A Community of Opportunities for All

A diplomat for thirty years, Ambassador Osius served from 2014 to 2017 as U.S. ambassador to Vietnam. Leading a team of 900, Ambassador Osius devised and implemented strategies to deepen economic, security and cultural ties between the two countries. In October 2021, Osius published his most recent book, Nothing Is Impossible: America’s Reconciliation with Vietnam, with a Foreword by former Secretary of State John Kerry, covering the two countries’ 25-year journey from adversaries to friends and partners.

After his departure from government, Osius joined Google Asia-Pacific as Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy, covering 19 Asian nations from Google’s Singapore headquarters. Earlier, he was a senior advisor at the Albright-Stonebridge Group and the first Vice President of Fulbright University Vietnam. Osius was associate professor at the National War College and Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

As a diplomat, Osius served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Political Minister-Counselor in New Delhi, India. Osius also served as deputy director of the Office of Korean Affairs at the State Department, regional environment officer for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and senior advisor on Asia and trade to Vice President Al Gore. He also served in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, and at the United Nations.

Ambassador Osius has authored numerous articles on Foreign Service tradecraft and U.S.-Asia policy. He wrote The U.S.-Japan Security Alliance: Why It Matters and How To Strengthen It (CSIS/Praeger 2002) as a fellow at the Japan Institute for International Affairs (日本国際問題研究所). While at CSIS, he published “Global Swing States: Deepening Partnerships with India and Indonesia” (Asia Policy, January 2014), Enhancing India-ASEAN Connectivity and A US-Indonesia Partnership for 2020.

Ambassador Osius earned a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and an Honorary Doctorate from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education. He was the first U.S. ambassador to receive the Order of Friendship from the President of Vietnam. He serves on the Asia Foundation’s Board of Trustees and is a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy.

Ambassador Osius speaks Vietnamese, French and Italian, and a bit of Japanese, Indonesian, Hindi, Thai, Tagalog and Greek. He and his husband, Clayton Bond, have a son and a daughter.

Joe Shaw: "I am a native of Bozeman, Montana, but I also have lived in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Switzerland, and Japan. My family has been in Montana since 1864. 

Most of my young years were spent in Fairbanks, Alaska, where my father was a physics professor at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). 

My career has taken me on a trip through the Rocky Mountains:

  A NOAA fellowship gave me the chance to study at the renowned Optical Sciences

  Center in Tucson, Arizona, where I wrote my Ph.D. dissertation on laser remote

  sensing advised by John Reagan (IEEE Fellow) and Jim Churnside (OSA Fellow). In

  2001 I joined the faculty at Montana State University back home in Bozeman. 

  I love playing music (primarily guitar and bass, saxophone not so much any more)

  and photographing natural optical phenomena around the world. In 2017 I

  published a photo-rich book, Optics in the Air: Observing optical phenomena

  through airplane windows. It's available through SPIE and Amazon."

Carol Spahn

US Peace Corps: The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love

Carol Spahn, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Romania, was sworn into office as the 21st Director of the Peace Corps in December 2022. She comes to the Peace Corps Headquarters with over 25 years of experience in international development, business, health and women’s empowerment. She served most recently as Chief Executive Officer and Acting Director of the Peace Corps. Previously, she served as Chief of Operations in the Africa Region, and as the Country Director of Peace Corps/Malawi. From Senior Vice President of Operations at Women for Women International, serving marginalized women in conflict affected countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, and DRC, to serving as Executive Director of Accordia Global Health Foundation, focused on creating sustainable health centers in Africa, Carol draws on a depth of knowledge and skill. As Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer of Small Enterprise Assistance Funds, she managed non-profit private equity funds invested in developing countries. Carol also worked at private sector institutions, including GE Capital and KPMG Peat Marwick. She holds a master’s degree in international development from the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs.

Sarah Howerton and Eamon Fahey

Sarah Howerton serves as the Development Manager at the IRC in Missoula where she works to support and strengthen refugee resettlement programs by overseeing the organization’s intern and volunteer programs, in-kind donations, fundraising, and community outreach efforts. She holds an BA in Anthropology and an MPA from the University of Colorado – Denver where she studied nonprofit program management and spent a winter term in Uganda and Rwanda studying International Development.

Eamon directs the Missoula office of the International Rescue Committee, the only resettlement agency operating in Montana. Since his arrival to Missoula in 2003, Eamon has worked for and led non-profit organizations and in the public sector. He has a BA in Russian and Eastern European Studies from Middlebury College, and a JD from Ohio State, where he served on the editorial board of the ABA/Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution and was a State Department Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellow.

Stephanie Gray

International Technology in Montana - Part 2  

Since July 2019, Stephanie Gray has served as the Dean of Gallatin College, Montana State University. Dean Gray has led the college through remarkable growth and the doubling of program offerings. Her passion is focusing on workforce certificate and degree programs that require innovative training in advanced technologies. Dean Gray is committed to leading the college in a way that best supports the regional economy and truly partners with employers. Alongside the workforce offerings, Gallatin College supports all students to fulfill their potential, with college ready math and writing courses, dual enrollment in high schools and Associate of Arts and Science degrees that seamlessly transfer into baccalaureate degree programs. Most of the enrollment growth in the college stems from the 22-workforce certificate and associate degree programs. Gallatin College provides relevant educational and training opportunities to students so these graduates can in turn go out and support the economic vitality of Southwest Montana.  

Before Gallatin College MSU, Dean Gray worked for MSU’s Local Government Center as a Research Associate and then the Youth Director for the Human Resource Development Council. These positions taught her the value of public/private partnerships and she learned education is the key to resolving issues of poverty and moving oneself into a life of opportunity and engagement.  

Dean Gray has lived in Bozeman Montana with her husband and 3 daughters since 1995. She was born in Texas and raised in Colorado, where she attended the University of Colorado completing her bachelor's degree in Psychology and then received her master's in public administration at Eastern Washington University
