Dr. Peter Marghella is currently the Special Advisor for Medical Planning and Preparedness for the International Medical Corps (IMC), a not-for-profit, Non-governmental Organization (NGO) that provides global medical and public health response to complex emergencies and disasters. Prior to joining IMC, Peter was the Director of the New York State Office of Emergency Management. A career Naval Officer, Peter has held positions as the Director of Medical Contingency Operations for the Office of the Secretary of Defense; Chief of Medical Plans and Operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Chief of Medical Plans and Intelligence for the U.S. Pacific Command; and Chief of Medical Plans and Operations for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. His national planning credentials include the National Smallpox Response Plan; the National Catastrophic Incident Response Plan (for response to domestic acts of nuclear terrorism); and the Federal Implementation Plan for Pandemic Influenza. He holds a doctorate in health sciences; Master’s degrees in national security and strategic studies and healthcare management and policy; and was an Executive Fellow in the inaugural class of the National Preparedness Leadership Institute at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He maintains an academic appointment as a Professorial Lecturer at the Milken School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, DC.
