Idleb is the last opposition stronghold in Syria. The armed group that controls the area is a UN-listed terrorist organization. The Syrian Government’s military campaign has emptied out entire cities and towns, forcing a million people from their homes in the last few months. The Turkish border is closed. What hope is there for the three million civilians who remain trapped in this area? What is the UN doing to help?

Mark Cutts is the United Nations Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria crisis. He has worked on many of the world’s biggest humanitarian emergencies of the last three decades, including in Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Myanmar. He has a degree in Theology and an M.Phil in International Relations. He is married and has three children.
