In the last ten years, and especially the last four, we have heard a lot about the danger of “fraying alliances.” In this talk, Dr. Adams will explain why states enter into alliances and why alliances change over time. She will argue that China’s rise as a great-power peer of the United States has resulted in “sensible hedging” among states that wish to limit the effects of great-power competition on their security and prosperity.
