Teacher Workshops

Teacher workshops bring together high school teachers from across Montana to meet with academics, government officials, and professionals in the field in engaging, small-group settings.  These all-day programs focus on important, timely international issues with expert speakers, in-depth discussions, informative group sessions, and lesson plan design.

TCFFor the past 2 years, the World Affairs Council of Montana has been awarded generous grants from the Turkish Cultural Foundation in order to better connect communities and classrooms with the rich culture of Turkey. Through these grants, the Council was able to offer the amazing “Discover Turkey” workshops.

“It was one of the most informative and inspiring teacher workshops I have been to in years.
I am motivated more than ever to find ways for my students to discover
and appreciate Turkey and the Muslim world.”
- Teacher Gwen Hoppe

Six Montana teachers visit Turkey as part of the 2009 study tour

2009 Turkey Tour

This past April, the Council held another teacher workshop (see below) for K-12 educators, with over 30 participants attending. One teacher drove more than 7 1/2 hours from Lambert, MT to attend.

Patricia Rauch of Deerlodge, Kristyn Morin of Kalispell, Kim Rott of Sentinel, Jim Stanicar of Frenchtown, Denise Dahl-Davis of Belgrade, and Ryan Delaney of Target Range all represented Montana on the trip. They traveled from the Bosphorus along the Aegean Coast and throughout central Turkey. Sites included: Roman, Ottoman, and Byzantine empire ruins, school tours, and classical Istanbul.

The teachers only paid $600 plus domestic airfare for the trip. International airfare, lodging, food, tours, and in-country travel costs were paid by the Turkish Cultural Foundation.  The TCF also organized the tours and all in-country logistics.

2008 Teacher Turkey Tour

2008 Turkey Tour

In 2008, the Council worked closely with four highly qualified and talented high school teachers to complete this three part series on Turkey: 1) K-12 Teacher Workshop; 2) Country Tour; 3) Community Presentation.

The first part of the program, the teacher workshop, took place on April 26, 2008. The event included guest presenters from around the state and over 45 participating teachers. The workshop’s mission was to broaden teachers’ understanding of Turkish culture, history, government, traditions, and it also included authentic Turkish cuisine.

The second part of the program, the country tour, consisted of a ten day travel-study tour of Turkey in July of 2008. The teachers returned with a more in-depth understanding of Turkish culture and history, and some amazing pictures.

For the final part of this program, these teachers offered a community presentation and second workshop relating their experience and ways to integrate Turkey in the classroom with various subject areas.
